Safety
At RiverRack, your adventure starts with safety first. Whether you’re heading out for a quick paddle or exploring a new body of water, we want every guest to enjoy a safe, smooth, and memorable experience. Please review the guidelines below before launching.
Before You Paddle
✔ Wear Your Life Jacket
A U.S. Coast Guard–approved personal flotation device (PFD) is required at all times while on the water. Every RiverRack rental comes with a properly fitted life jacket—please keep it secured.
✔ Know Your Limits
Paddling is fun but can be physically demanding. Choose locations and conditions that match your comfort level and experience.
✔ Check Weather & Water Conditions
Always be aware of:
-
Wind strength
-
Storm forecasts
-
Water temperatures
-
Currents and boat traffic
If conditions seem unsafe, do not launch.
✔ Use the Right Equipment
Our kayaks, paddles, and PFDs are inspected regularly. If anything feels damaged or missing when you arrive at the kiosk, contact us before starting your session.
Safety FAQs
What if there’s an emergency on the water?
In every emergency, please dial 9-1-1. Plan ahead get to land as fast as possible
What if the weather becomes too unsafe to paddle?
Please do not paddle in inclement weather.
If weather conditions become unsafe while you are on the water and away from the RiverRack kiosk, return to the kiosk immediately. If you cannot safely return, seek shelter in a secure location and call 9-1-1 to begin a foul-weather rescue.
Do I need to wear a life jacket? Is one included in my rental?
Life jackets are included in your rental, and every paddler is responsible for making sure their personal floatation device (PFD) is on their kayak throughout their adventure. Children under 13 are required to wear their PFD continuously while on the water.
Can I rent a Kayak regardless of water temperature?
Rental is only permitted when water temperatures are above (59°F). Rental hours and availability are scheduled according to expected temperatures and other site-specific considerations.
Our operating calendar is determined using historical trends and publicly available water-temperature data. While we strive to schedule rental days when conditions are suitable, we do not control or guarantee water temperatures at any time.
Days of operation are planned in accordance with regional water-temperature history and guidance from recognized safety organizations. Although no precise determination can be made for every day, our goal is to offer rentals only when conditions are typically appropriate for recreational paddling without the need for wetsuits.
